What started as selling a few sunglasses at music festivals to gain extra income has now turned into an international brand that is renowned for its notoriously cool sunglasses for the nonconforming and free thinking. With music inspired roots, countless adventures abroad and some Melbourne flair, Quay Australia has become a favourite for individuals with fearless style, a carefree attitude and fresh perspective.

Founders Linda and Allen Hammond launched their Melbourne based business in 2004 which has flourished over the years, having collaborations with actresses, models and YouTube vloggers as well as other brands. Today, Quay’s sunglasses are found in over 2000 retailers worldwide and online throughout 35 countries, at an affordable price point.

The Design Process

In the beginning, Linda and Allen would design original frames or see vintage frames and alter them to create their own unique ‘quay’ style. Now their son, Zak, has learned how to draw frames and joined the company in 2009. Zak started to visually represent their original frames using CAD.

The three family members (Allen, Linda and Zak) all play a part in the design process of each frame. They don’t always agree (just like any family!) but they have a policy that two outvotes one when they can’t agree on the colour or finishes. For inspiration, they use travel experiences and the day-to-day scenes on the streets of Melbourne.


In a recent interview by Kit magazine, Linda says that at Quay they have a strong stance on the working conditions in which the sunglasses are manufactured. Having a yearly audit that adheres to the internationally recognised ISO 9000 standards for Quality Management Systems enables them to maintain an ethical brand.

Brand Influencers

Many A-list stars seem to be obsessed with the brand as they’re often seen wearing the sunglasses on social media, including Kylie and Kendall Jenner, Gwen Stefani, Vanessa Hudgens, Gigi Hadid, Rita Ora, and Beyonce. Quay has also collaborated with well-known YouTube beauty vloggers Chrisspy, Amanda Steele, and Desi Perkins, Pretty Little Liars actress Shay Mitchell and cosmetic brand Too Faced. Most recently, Quay has announced they will be collaborating with Kylie Jenner in QUAY X KYLIE, a limited edition range with four styles, priced around $75 to $80.

 Using Social Media

In a recent blog post by Urban Outfitters, founder Linda Hammond says that social media is a huge part of the Quay following. To keep the posts authentic and from the heart, Linda herself runs the page and posts regularly to keep in touch. Quay Australia has over 100,000 likes on Facebook and over one million followers on Instagram.

“I want to see people smile no matter where they are in the world, and see their selfies with our glasses,” says founder Linda Hammond.
